Olfactory attractants for mosquito surveillance and control: 1-octen-3-ol.

چکیده

The role of octenol as a mosquito attractant is still under investigation. When used alone, octenol has been a good attractant for only a few species. However, there appears to be a synergistic response of species of the genera Aedes, Anopheles, Coquillettidia, Psorophora, and Mansonia to the combination of octenol and CO2. Further research is required to determine the potential role of this compound in mosquito management programs.

Evaluation of 1-octen-3-ol, carbon dioxide, and light as attractants for mosquitoes associated with two distinct habitats in North Carolina.

Field studies were conducted in North Carolina to determine the responses of mosquitoes found in salt marsh and inland creek flood plain areas to 1-octen-3-ol (octenol), carbon dioxide (CO2), and light in various combinations with Centers for Disease Control (CDC) light traps. Over 56,000 adult mosquito specimens of 12 species in 4 genera were collected in the salt marsh. They exhibited a gener...

The effectiveness of light, 1-octen-3-ol, and carbon dioxide as attractants for anopheline mosquitoes in Madang Province, Papua New Guinea.

The effectiveness of light, 1-octen-3-ol (octenol), carbon dioxide (CO2) and a combination of CO2 and octenol were compared as mosquito attractants using encephalitis vector surveillance traps in 2 villages in Madang Province, Papua New Guinea (PNG). Five species were collected, Anopheles koliensis, Anopheles farauti 2, Anopheles farauti 4, Anopheles longirostris, and Anopheles bancroftii. Ligh...

Lutzomyia spp. (Diptera: Psychodidae) response to olfactory attractant- and light emitting diode-modified Mosquito Magnet X (MM-X) traps.

Mosquito Magnet-X traps were modified for use with blue, green, red, and blue-green-red light-emitting diodes and olfactory attractants to determine the response of Lutzomyia shannoni (Dyar) and Lutzomyia vexator (Coquillett) (Diptera: Psychodidae) field populations to these attractants. Red and blue-green-red-baited traps captured the highest numbers of Lu. shannoni and Lu. vexator, respective...

Carbon dioxide and 1-octen-3-ol as mosquito attractants.

Interval suction traps were used to study the attractant effect of CO2 and 1-octen-3-ol on trap catches of mosquito populations at 2 different locations in Florida. There was no significant increase in the numbers of mosquitoes caught when the concentration of CO2 was increased from 200 to 1,000 cc/min. One-octen-3-ol used by itself attracted mosquitoes in numbers similar to CO2 released at 200...

Evaluation of six mosquito traps for collection of Aedes albopictus and associated mosquito species in a suburban setting in north central Florida.

We compared 6 adult mosquito traps for effectiveness in collecting Aedes albopictus from suburban backyards with the goal of finding a more suitable surveillance replacement for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) light trap. Trap selection included 2 commercial propane traps (Mosquito Magnet Professional trap and Mosquito Magnet Liberty trap), 2 Aedes-specific traps (Fay-Princ...
